“Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones” follows a group of teenagers in Oxnard who deal with the demon of a mysterious cult who has “marked” one of them. Omar Sanchez, media coordinator for Taps West Coast, which uses recording devices to capture evidence of paranormal activity, demonstrated some of the recordings he has made of several spirits in the Oxnard area. Magana said downtown Oxnard area actually has three botanicas, or stores that sell herbs, charms and other religious and spiritual items, so the area fit into the theme of the movie. Makeup artists from Modern Beauty Academy created skeletons and other images on the faces of fans. Dark-themed paintings created by artists from The Lab 805 in Ventura created an eerie ambience outside the theater. “It’s all in good fun tonight, and we’re celebrating the fact that the movie producers thought it was interesting enough to put Oxnard on the map,” Magana said.įor the event, the water fountain in the center courtyard of Centennial Plaza was filled with dry ice. Magana said the district only recently had an active dialogue with the movie studios because of the holidays, so organizers weren’t able to get actors to Friday’s event, but they did get plenty of movie T-shirts, DVD copies of previous “Paranormal Activity” movies, and other merchandise to give out to moviegoers.
“As soon as we heard this movie had a Latino theme and it was being set in the city of Oxnard, we reached out to the studios,” said Abel Magana, executive director of the Oxnard Downtown Management District. The four previous films in the franchise have generated more than $350 million in domestic ticket sales and have garnered a large Hispanic audience. Seizing on the notoriety of having the film subtitled “The Marked Ones” set in Oxnard and anticipating a big opening weekend, Plaza Cinemas 14 planned the premiere event in cooperation with the Oxnard Downtown Management District. The event, which included makeup artists, local alternative healers and tarot card readers, marked the release of the fifth installment in the popular supernatural horror film series. Several hundred fans showed up Friday night at Plaza Cinemas 14 in downtown Oxnard’s Centennial Plaza for a red-carpet premiere of the newest “Paranormal Activity” movie.
